BPB wins Innovation Award 2020
The winner of the innovation award of the concrete components supply industry in 2020 is BPB Beton- und Prüftechnik Blomberg GmbH & Co. KG, which was delighted with their team at the stand to receive the award.
Neu-Ulm – On February 18, 2020, as part of the 64th BetonTage, the innovation award of the concrete components supply industry 2020 was awarded. The winner is BPB Beton- und Prüftechnik Blomberg GmbH & Co. KG, Blomberg, for the product BPB® ECO SPACER®, a non-toxic, 97% bio-based and biodegradable scattering granulate that serves as protection during transport and storage of patios – and pavement slabs is used.
Environmental protection with eco granules
The award-winning BPB® ECO SPACER® granulate is a joint development with Biofibre GmbH in Altdorf. It can replace the pellets mostly made of soft polyethylene (LDPE) that were previously used for the transport and storage of terrace and sidewalk slabs, almost equivalent. Contrary to the environmental instructions of the panel manufacturers, construction companies often carelessly “swept them aside” after laying the materials and thus end up in part in the environment where the material easily survives centuries and is fragmented into microplastics. However, according to previous tests, microorganisms metabolize the ECO SPACER® in the soil to compost within two years. Thanks to the use of the innovative granulate, considerable environmental effects have already been achieved in a very short time. The product was launched on a trial basis at the end of 2018 and an estimated 400 tons of it was sold in 2019. If one assumes that only a tenth of the LDPE granules replaced by it have so far landed on the edge of paths and in water ditches (there are no reliable figures), the product saves the environment 40 tons of microplastics per year. This is more than the Rhine, according to a recent study by the University of Basel, washes into the sea on tiny plastic particles!
